[...] I put my money where my mouth was and decided to put my own advice on buying pet medications to the test. I put in an order today at 1-800-PetMeds (aff) for some heartworm and flea medication and was surprised by how much I was able to save. I shopped around a bit and found EntirelyPets.com to have the lowest prices on the medications I wanted. But living in California, I got charged tax at 8.25%. [...]

Thanks An! I'd forgotten about the grooming thing. We don't do much to Lola since she's low maintenance, other than clip her nails. And yes, I've been guilty more than once of hitting the quick :( She's awfully nice about it though.

I've heard good things about getting prescriptions at canadavet.com. We get Spike's allergy medicine at Costco - it's just 25mg Benadryl generic for people, so it was much cheaper to buy the bottle of 400 at Costco than buy whatever the vet was trying to give us.

Also buying the largest bag of dog food is usually cheaper than buying the 5lb bags. The only thing is to make sure it doesn't go bad when you get to the end, by keeping it in a cool dry covered place.

Another tip is to do as much dog maintenance you can yourself like nail trimming, light grooming, ear cleaning, bathing, etc. Most places charge a ton of $$ for these services and they're not that hard to do once you learn how. Of course, that said, we accidentally cut the quick in Peanut's toenail this morning and he started bleeding. :( Sad. But I'd rather it be us than some stranger, if it had to happen.

Also, dog training classes can be cheaper through your local Humane Society or Community College rather than private training companies.

Can you tell I liked this topic?
