I always like sharing and learning about different cultures and countries. @Alicia: You're right, the US definitely has a problem with healthcare coverage. At least in Spain, you can be sure that you at least have a doctor to see if you need it, no matter your financial or insurance situation. I had a really bad bout in Spain right after New Year's in 2004, from a virus going around or eating those darned ostras (oysters), and we were due to drive all the way back to Brussels the next day. Somewhere near Bordeaux, I was feeling very bad early in the morning, so we went to the local hospital urgent care. Their doctors saw me (a non-EU resident) and gave me a prescription, and about 3 months later my husband got the bill for 12 Euroes. So there are definitely some perks to the European system, too. I'll also have to regularly visit your blog as well, to keep up my Spanish! Thanks for your comments everyone.

Having spent a number of years in Japan, I can tell you that I'm not very confident in their doctors or hospitals when it comes to major surgery.
