I'd guess that it's probably more tax- and transactions-cost efficient to give bigger amounts to just a few charities (or bigger amounts in general), but I don't know where the cutoff amount would be. $100? $10,000? Etc.

I know there are some good articles out there on charitable donation planning, but I'm not yet in a place where I have so much to give that I'd start thinking about setting up a trust or other special account! Our giving is a bit sporadic, so I guess planning for donations within a budget would be the ideal way to go.

Microsoft conveniently has the annual Giving Campaign which makes it really easy for us to remember to donate, and also spreads the cost out through the year. My favorites are usually dog-related :) but we also give to Fred Hutchinson and Caltech as well. I can't figure out if it would be better for me to just pick 2 or 3 and give all of the money to them, or pick 6 or 7 and spread it out amongst them? Thoughts?
